Quality Improvement Coaches
A key feature of the IPIP design is the use of Quality Improvement Coaches (QICs). The QIC is a member of the IPIP team in the state. Each state participating in IPIP has several coaches who are assigned to specific regions or geographic areas. The QICs go into practices to work with the practice team on fulfilling the requirements of participation.
These activities are completed by the practice with support from QICs:
- Implementing a patient registry and populating it with practice data or learning how to extract data from an existing electronic medical record
- Review IPIP measures and specifications
- Collect data each month on the measures
- Use decision support tools, standing orders, role assignments for elements of care
- Monitor process at least weekly
- Teach patients self-management support
- Engage in small tests of change; spread improvements to identified population
QICs also conduct a baseline assessment of practices and submit a monthly report on their progress. This information becomes part of the IPIP monthly summary report.
QICs come from a variety of backgrounds and sources. They include nurses, social workers, health educators and quality improvement specialists. Many have previous experience working in quality improvement and data collection. QICs are chosen for their ability to communicate well, form relationships and problem-solve.
For more QIC resources and information, go to the Resources folder, and then into QIC Training Educational Content.
